RE Council

At Cottesmore St. Mary Catholic Primary School, our RE council plays a vital role in deepening the spiritual life of our school. The RE council is made up of 1 member from each class across the year and they serve on the team for the academic year. Pupils are nominated by their previous class teachers and invited to take up post in the Autumn Term. These pupils are ambassadors for the Catholic Life of the school and are proactive in promoting our school values and expectations. Pupils report that they are proud to hold this role in our school community.

Our RE council team members are encouraged and expected to be trustworthy role models and uphold the expectations of our school. Pupils have a clear sense of their roles and responsibilities and this is displayed in the school so that the whole school is aware. One of the aims of the RE council is to involve others and to promote prayer and worship and in doing so, play their own part in bringing God to the pupils of our school. The RE council are also champions of the Gospel, encouraging children from across the school to be active members of our faith community and joining in e.g. Rosary prayer meetings and leading pop up prayer spaces across the school year. This has been met with a very positive response and pupils have been eager to partake, irrespective of their beliefs and backgrounds. This dedicated pupil team meets regularly to collaborate on preparing meaningful prayer and liturgy opportunities and the depth of participation from the school as a result has been commendable and the prayerful and respectful atmosphere created by the team is palpable.

The RE council are also instrumental in working on areas of the RE Action plan both through sharing their ideas and perspectives, as well as being active in making and creating items to enhance our provision through to the monitoring and evaluation of events. Through their service on the RE council, their confidence and skills in presenting to larger numbers of people grows, often beyond expectations. In addition to their work on prayer and liturgy, the RE Council is committed to embedding Catholic Social Teaching into their initiatives. They carefully consider how their ideas can enhance the Catholic life of our school, inspiring their peers to live out the Gospel values in practical ways.
