Fairtrade Reps

The Fairtrade reps had a great afternoon last Friday making lemonade to sell at our school summer fair. They worked hard chopping and squeezing the lemons and then mixed in Fairtrade sugar and water until they got the perfect balance of sweet and sour. We then had a great time promoting Fairtrade at the soft drinks stall where many children and parents enjoyed sampling our Fairtrade lemonade and we managed to make a small amount of profit to donate to the Fairtrade Foundation.

Fairtrade Fortnight

A huge thank you to everybody who donated to our Fairtrade cake sale last week. There were some absolutely brilliant bakes and it was super to see the range of Fairtrade ingredients that were used. All of the cakes were extremely popular and all were sold, raising a huge £197 for our Fairtrade fund! Well done to the Fairtrade reps who were involved in planning and helping to set up the event, as well as leading an assembly last week to the whole school. It has been a fantastic Fairtrade fortnight at Cottesmore!

Our Fairtrade reps worked extremely hard at the Advent Fair last week, preparing and selling delicious Fairtrade hot chocolate, complete with cream, marshmallows and Malteasers. The stall proved to be very popular and the reps raised an impressive £158 in total! Half of this will go to the PTA and the other half has been donated to the Fairtrade Foundation. For those who enjoyed the hot chocolate, we used Clipper Instant Hot Chocolate (Fairtrade). Yum! When Christmas shopping this year,  please choose Fairtrade where possible and support those who produce our food. Fairtrade Fornight

The Fairtrade Committee delivered an assembly to highlight the importance of Fairtrade Fortnight. Cottesmore have created a Fairtrade Recipe Book to sell at the Summer Fair. Children from Reception to Year 6 helped to create the recipe book at home, using the template provided. Children decided to write a recipe (either, sweet or savoury) that used Fairtrade items.

Fairtrade Fortnight

We launched Fairtrade Fortnight 2019 with an assembly focusing on the importance of being a Fairtrade school and how we can support others through using Fairtrade products. This year Fairtrade Fortnight is focusing on the lives of cocoa farmers in particular. Did you know that a cocoa farmer in West Africa requires a daily living wage of £1.86? Yet this isn’t always the case.

However, we can support these farmers by buying Fairtrade items. Mrs Tearle organised another competition in order to continue to raise awareness of Fairtrade. Children were invited to design their own Fairtrade mug that must be eye-catching and have a Fairtrade message on it. Winners will have their designs printed onto real mugs to be used around the school and will be invited to enjoy a delicious Fairtrade coffee morning with somebody from home.

Hot Chocolate Challenge!

All children were set a challenge to design their own Fairtrade hot chocolate drink. They had lots of fun thinking of delicious Fairtrade toppings for their designs.

Winners of the competition were given the opportunity to bring their hot chocolate designs to life. The children enjoyed making the FairTrade hot chocolate and adding their suggested toppings. A big thank you to Mrs Tearle, Fairtrade Lead, for organising this.

Year Five Enterprise

Year Five undertook the task of researching, designing, making and selling Fairtrade products. They produced chocolate based items that were made using Fairtrade chocolate. This was their D.T. project for the term and linked with their learning about the Mayan civilisation. The did a fantastic job, with all the funds raised going to Fairtrade charities. Well Done Year Five!

Fairtrade Enterprise

Year 5 had a enterprise project based around chocolate. They made fair trade chocolate products to sell and learned about the benefits to the farmers of buying Fair Trade products where possible.
