Music

At Cottesmore, Music is a fun, creative and expressive element of the curriculum which is about co-operating with others to contribute an individual part to a whole performance.

In the Foundation stage, Key Stage 1 and 2 Music is taught in the Music Room by Mrs. Concannon. The Music Room is specially equipped with a wide range of tuned and non-tuned percussion instruments as well as keyboards and an electronic drum kit.

Lessons will typically involve a mixture of: listening to music, music theory, singing, performing, composing as a class or in groups using a range of instruments, recording work, listening to it and evaluating what the children have done.

In addition to a weekly Music lesson, children have other opportunities to get involved in the Music scene at the school: We have a very popular guitar club with about 30 members which runs after school. The Choir and the recorder club meet at lunch times and are open to anyone in Key stage 2. The school has a seasonal Samba band which perform at the annual Brighton Festival Children’s Parade and in our masses. For children in Years 4-6 there is an opportunity to join the Cottesmore Band. This is for more accomplished musicians to play established songs and write their own Music which is incorporated into the masses and celebrations held throughout the year.

A high proportion of children learn a musical instrument and all children are introduced to musical notation.
Extra opportunities are taken where possible. For example year 6, Mrs Concannon and Mrs Lavelle recently enjoyed a Gospel Singing workshop.
